As part of its ambitious energy transition goals, the Government of India has set a target of achieving 100 gigawatt (GW) of solar energy by 2022, of which 40 GW are to come from rooftop solar (RTS) energy. However, the performance of the RTS sector over the last few years has been underwhelming, with an installed capacity of only 3.4 GW as of 31 December 2018— just 8.5 per cent of the target. Of this, the residential sector contributed the least—15 per cent of the total capacity despite its high technical potential. This report summaries the findings of a study undertaken with the objective to gauge how consumers perceive rooftop solar technology and their levels of awareness and willingness to accept new business models.
