Demand side energy management strategies for commercial buildings depend on accurate, comprehensive data that is readily available and up to date. In India, multiple administrative agencies, including Central Electricity Authority (CEA), Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG), and Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), publish some data on electricity and fuel consumption in the commercial sector. However, the data collected is often lacking in granularity and might not be comprehensive for the purposes of understanding energy usage in commercial buildings.

This study builds upon findings by a NITI Aayog sub-group that identified the current status of energy and activity data, challenges in the existing framework, and identifying actions to overcome the data challenges.Building on this past effort by NITI Aayog, this study has carried out a detailed assessment to evaluate the robustness of commercial sector energy consumption data, and provide recommendations to tackle some of the challenges identified through the assessment.
