An Adaptive Thermal Comfort Standard for India

Shakti supported the design of an adaptive thermal comfort standard, one suited specifically for climatic conditions in India. The adaptive model recognizes that people's thermal comfort needs can vary with the outdoor environmental conditions of their location. Therefore, it provides design and operation guidance for air conditioned, naturally ventilated and mixed mode buildings specific to the Indian context and a broader comfort band. After nearly four years of research, analysis and stakeholder dialogue, in early 2017, the National Building Code included this model as the India specific standard to provide thermal comfort in buildings. It is estimated that the proper implementation of this standard is likely to save up to 35% of cooling electricity in buildings.
