Renewable Energy

Sustained economic growth places an increased demand on energy resources, energy systems and infrastructure. Domestic energy demand is expected to double by 2040 with electricity demand potentially tripling over the same period . At present, our energy mix is dominated by traditional, emissions-intensive fuel sources. But with increasing concerns about climate change and warming temperatures, relying heavily on traditional fuels is not a viable option. Transitioning to clean energy sources of energy which have renewables at their core is of vital importance if we are to meet our Intended Nationally Determined Contributions.

The Indian government has demonstrated its commitment to increasing the share of renewable energy in the electricity mix of the country. Two ambitious targets for renewable energy— 175 GW by 2022 and 450 GW by 2030— have been set by the government and efforts are underway to achieve them. India has consistently been among the top ten countries in terms of attractiveness as a renewable energy market owing to its aggressive targets, which are backed by facilitating polices and regulations.

India’s potential for renewable energy is tremendous. The country can produce more than 1,000 GW of renewable energy if the resources are utilized to their optimum capacity. Increased penetration of renewable energy can not only reduce the emissions intensity of the power sector but also drastically improve energy access and energy security in the country. Decentralised renewable energy can decrease our reliance on grid-distributed electricity and is a boon especially in areas where the supply of grid-based electricity is not reliable.
