Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) are a group of industrial refrigerants that are potent greenhouse gases (GHGs) with a high global warming potential (GWP). HFCs were developed to replace CFCs and HCFCs, which are potent GHGs as well as Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS). With the demand for cooling equipment set to rise dramatically in India, the unrestricted use of HFCs in India could significantly increase the country’s climate footprint. At the same time, there exists a huge potential to reduce HFC emissions through the adoption of low-GWP HFC alternatives, though many of the alternatives are not fully commercialised yet. Shakti is supporting efforts to address technology, regulatory, cost and market related challenges to facilitate an HFC phase down, particularly considering the timelines agreed under the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol.
